About Pastor Paul Oman

Paul Oman

This year’s guest artist, Pastor Paul Oman, is a former Calvary member who went on to become an ordained minister. While serving as pastor to the congregation of Trinity Lutheran Church in Birchwood, Wis., Paul first incorporated his lifelong love of painting with his commission to “tell the story.”

“In the spring of 2006, our Worship and Music Team and I took a risk and planned something different for Good Friday. I suggested painting a larger-than-life sized mural, which would depict the events of the day.”

What would become a highly anticipated, annual event at the church is now a year-round ministry for Paul called “Drawn to the Word.” Its mission is to “paint murals for congregations and audiences so that God’s story can once again be told, seen, remDrawn to the Lightembered and re-told for years to come.”

In addition to murals created at “Drawn to the Word” events, Paul creates watercolor paintings, some of which have received awards and special recognition. These include third place in the 1997 Minnesota Loon Art State Competition, first place in the 2002 Iowa Artist State Show and Outstanding Watercolor Finalist in the 2010 Fine Art View International Painting Competition of more than 600 entries. As a member of both the Wisconsin and Minnesota Watercolor Societies, Paul earned merit awards in their fall and spring exhibitions in 2007.

“The awards, however, are not the real reward for me,” Paul adds. “The process of painting and the joy of it is truly the reward, which is purely a gift and blessing from God.”
