Strategic Assessment - Question 8 and answer
Q8. What is our current staffing and organizational structure?
Multiple talents, time commitments and energy are needed to support our mission and move God's plan forward. Knowing what needs to be done, and what kind of staff and structure we need to do it, is critical to the success of our church.
We function as a "staff directed, council protected" model of church governance. Our senior pastor provides leadership in developing, communicating and implementing Calvary's vision. The 33 member church council reflects the character of the congregation which encourages open communication and honest debate on conflicting points of view. Their role is to listen reflectively and assure that our ministries and programs remain true to our vision and mission The council stays informed, makes certain decisions, and considers and approves the budget. Council decisions are published monthly in the church bulletin. The executive committee consists of the senior pastor representing the staff and 3 council officers and 2 council members elected by the laity. They are empowered to review, update and implement our human resource policy.
Calvary is a member congregation of the ELCA and our relationship remains strong. Although policy disagreements may arise from time to time, we recognize that we can accomplish more by participating with this church body. We believe that the dollars we contribute through the ELCA are well spent.
Our executive staff provides the inspiration, planning and passion to execute the vision. Calvary's reputation attracts talented staff leaders. Our current leadership brings our church a variety of experiences and expertise. Their strong Christian character and multiple viewpoints provide a unique opportunity for the creation and the development of effective ministries.
The role of the executive staff is to communicate the purpose of the ministries they lead in the context of the vision and mission of the church. They oversee the development of ministry plans and ensure that all program leaders and staff are in alignment with Calvary's mission. They function as a mutually respectful team in a positive work culture that empowers them to be creative, share responsibility and get the work done.
The executive staff is committed to serving those that they lead. They equip them by training, coaching and encouraging. They inspire them by modeling and sharing their deeply held Christian beliefs and values.
Our program staff provides the talent and commitment required to carry out the vision. Calvary is recognized in the local community and by other churches for our highly successful programs and ministries. This is in part the result of strong program leaders. Our program staff has been selected for their expertise and their Christian commitment. They have accepted the call and have low turnover because of Calvary's strong congregational commitment and support of their ministries.
The role of the program staff is to manage the ministries and programs in the context of the vision and mission of the church. They develop the gifts and skills of the people that participate and contribute and assure that the work gets done. They manage the processes that keep their programs effective and efficient and they communicate, share learning and team up with other program staff to optimize results.
Our finance and administrative staff provides the support required to achieve our vision. Calvary's effectiveness is grounded in the support staff. Many of our support staff have been with us for more than 20 years and add a historical perspective for newer staff, our present activities, and our future plans. They also bring a strong Christian commitment to their daily lives.
The role of the finance and administrative staff is to create sound operating structures in context of the vision and mission of the church. They facilitate communications, support our computer technologies, manage our property, analyze program results, and maintain fiscal responsibility. They stay abreast of media development and recommend and implement new technologies that enhance our capabilities. They manage our kitchen, which provides more than ten thousand open meals each year. They team up with staff and program leaders to maximize ministry outcomes.
Strategic Imperative #8: Assure that the church has the necessary talent and an organizational structure that effectively fulfills the vision and mission.
