Strategic Assessment - Question 3 and answer

Q3. What is the profile of the people in our local community?

Demographic resources were obtained from Percept, a national company that supplies strategic information to churches. They provided current demographics and ethographic profiles (beliefs, values, preferences & behaviors) of the people within the same10 zip code areas as most Calvary members.

Population and Households: Currently, there are 229,927 people residing in our study area. The population has increased by 5.8% since 1990 and is expected to increase by 1.6% by 2007.

There are 94,297 households. They have increased by 4.7% since 1990 and are expected to increase by 1.3% by 2007.

Race/Ethnicity: Anglos represent 88% of the population. All other racial/ethnic groups make up just 12%, which is well below the national average of 30%. They are expected to grow to 31,450 or 13.4% of the population by 2007.

Phase of Life: Age segments reflect differing attitudes and expectations. The median age of the community today is 38. It is projected to be 39 in 2007.

Contribution Indicator: The average household income is $90,000, the median income is $75,000. Both are expected to increase by 30% by 2007. Overall giving to charities, religious organizations and educational institutions is considered very high in our community compared to national averages.

Religious Preferences: Faith involvement and affiliation with a Christian religion is somewhat high compared to national averages. The dominant Christian religious preference is 28% Catholic, 19% Lutheran and 11% Methodist. 15% have changed their preference in the last 10 years. 25% have decreased their involvement in their faith in the past 10 years.

Respondents identified their basic program preferences if they would be looking for a church, not if they actually were seeking an affiliation. Daycare is not a typical expectation when seeking a church.

Strategic Imperative #3: Evaluate our programs and their ability to meet the changing needs of our local community.
